Horace ​Walpole (1717-1797), hijo del primer ministro británico Sir Robert Walpole, estudió en Eton y en el King’s College de Cambridge, centro que abandonó sin obtener un título. En 1747 Walpole adquiere una granja en Twickenham, a orillas del Támesis, que reforma y decora como un pequeño castillo gótico: Strawberry Hill. Durante años mantuvo una abundante correspondencia con los principales protagonistas de la política y la cultura de su tiempo, como Madame du Deffand o Sir Horace Mann. Escribió poesía, sátiras y ensayos históricos, pero la obra que le granjeó la inmortalidad fue un capricho literario titulado El castillo de Otranto (1764), publicado originalmente como si fuera la tradución de un texto italiano del siglo XVI, que inició una fecunda moda y un género literario que llega hasta nuestros días: la novela gótica. El castillo de Otranto, cuya acción se desarrolla en la Italia medieval, narra la historia del tirano Manfred, cuya estirpe arrastra una maldición desde que su abuelo usurpara el poder del castillo a sus legítimos poseedores. Manfred trata de perpetuar su herencia casando a su débil hijo Conrad con la princesa Isabella, pero poco antes de la boda ocurre un accidente fatal de origen aparentemente mágico que frustra sus designios. A partir de este suceso, se desencadenarán una serie de misteriosos fenómenos sobrenaturales y pasiones encendidas que tendrán como escenario el asfixiante y siniestro decorado del castillo, uno de los principales “personajes” del relato: puertas chirriantes, pasadizos oscuros y criptas secretas hacen su aparición por primera vez. Había nacido la literatura de terror.

Funny, ​absurd, satirical, and disturbing—these stories are Horace Walpole's most original, yet least known writings These short tales can claim to be the first surrealist writings in English—and remain some of the strangest fiction in all literature. They were originally published in 1785 in an edition of six copies, all of which Walpole kept for himself. An extra story is included, which was preserved only in manuscript. Truly bizarre, Walpole's stories defy the fictional conventions of his day, beginning with an often-imitated mock preface explaining that the stories were "undoubtedly written a little before the creation of the world, and have ever since been preserved, by oral tradition, in the mountains of Crampcraggiri, an uninhabited island, not yet discovered."

All ​the familiar components of the Gothic novel - the ominous darkness and the howling winds, the dire portents and the ineluctable prophecy - originate in this tale of unnatural passions and unacknowledgeable guilt. The clap of thunder, the creaking door, and "the clank of more than mortal armour" reverberate in these pages as contrapuntal accents to the portrait that steps out of its frame, the statue that bleeds, the skeleton in a hermit's cowl that prays. It is in this setting that the story of Manfred, Prince of Otranto, unfolds. His eagerness to marry off his son Conrad is thwarted when a gigantic, supernatural helmet crushes the youth to death and sets off a fearful sequence of events. Written half-jokingly by the clever, dilettantish Walpole, this story started a fashion that brought the romantic, the uncanny, and the bizarre to the literature of Western Europe.
