Henry De Tamble ist ein Zeitreisender! Um etwaigen Fehlkäufen vorzubeugen: Bei Audrey Niffeneggers Erstling handelt es sich -- trotz des suggestiven Titels -- nicht um Science Fiction. Die Autorin (die sich augenscheinlich in der rothaarigen Renaissance-Beauty Clare optisch verewigt hat, wie das Umschlagfoto auf hübsche Art beweist), legt eine die Sinne verwirrende und verschachtelte Liebesgeschichte vor. Niffenegger betreibtein regelrechtes Vexierspiel. Zwei, die einander bedürfen, durchschreiten ein langes Leben politischer und kultureller Umwälzungen. Kunst, Literatur (Clare bevorzugt Rilke), Drogen, Punkrock, ja selbst der 11. September, werden clever in die Handlung verwoben. Ihren besonderen Reiz erhalten Henrys Zeitreisen durch die Tatsache, dass er in die Zukunft blicken kann und damit sehr diskret umgehen muss. Der Umstand, dass ein Ereignis stattfindet und sich später erst ankündigt, beansprucht sämtliche verfügbaren Hirnwindungen des Lesers, wenngleich das Paradox der Begegnung Henrys mit seinem jüngeren/älteren Ich logisch nicht befriedigend aufgelöst wird. Die ständigen Zeitsprünge, in denen Clare und Henry sich in der Erzählung abwechseln, sind nicht unanstrengend. Dass der Leser dennoch den Faden nicht verliert, spricht für Niffeneggers erzählerische Qualitäten. Eine anrührende Saga über die Unvergänglichkeit der Liebe in einer sich stetig verändernden Welt. Oder könnte es auch umgekehrt sein? Ravi Unger
