After 1100 the language went through a period of change so rapid that, by the time two centuries had passed, few could read these old texts. Tra le molte riduzioni cinematografiche, la più recente è quella di Tim Burton con Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway e Helena Bonham Carter. «Alice cominciava a non poterne più di starsene seduta accanto alla sorella, sulla riva del fiume, senza far niente: un paio di volte aveva dato un’occhiata al libro che la sorella stava leggendo, ma non c’erano figure né storielle, “e a che serve un libro”, pensò Alice, “se non ha figure né storielle?”.» Lewis Carroll (1832-1898), pseudonimo di Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, dopo la laurea in matematica fu nominato dapprima bibliotecario, quindi docente di matematica al Christ College di Oxford; accostò sempre alla carriera ufficiale molti altri interessi. Oltre alle due sue opere più famose, appunto, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) e Through the Looking-Glass (1871), va ricordato il racconto in versi The Hunting of the Snark (1876).
