Isak Dinesen - Out ​of Africa
Out ​of Africa is Isak Dinesen's memoir of her years in Africa, from 1914 to 1931, on a four-thousand-acre coffee plantation in the hills near Nairobi. She had come to Kenya from Denmark with her husband, and when they separated she stayed on to manage the farm by herself, visited frequently by her lover, the big-game hunter Denys Finch-Hatton, for whom she would make up stories "like Scheherazade." In Africa, "I learned how to tell tales," she recalled many years later. "The natives have an ear still. I told stories constantly to them, all kinds." Her account of her African adventures, written after she had lost her beloved farm and returned to Denmark, is that of a master storyteller, a woman whom John Updike called "one of the most picturesque and flamboyant literary personalities of the century."

Reinaldo Arenas - Before ​Night Falls
This ​shocking memoir by the Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas is a book about sexual, political and artistic freedom. In "Before Night Falls", Arenas recounts his journey from a poverty-stricken childhood in rural Cuba to his death in New York four decades later. He tells of his odyssey from young rebel fighting for the Revolution, through his suppression as a writer, his disillusionment with Castro, his imprisonment and torture, to his eventual flight from Cuba. Now a feature film starring Javier Bardem and Johnny Depp, "Before Night Falls" is a stunning testament to an individual's urge to create against all odds.

Karen Blixen - Volt ​egy farmom Afrikában
1912 ​telén egy huszonhét éves dán úrilány eljegyezte magát svéd unokatestvérével, Bror Blixen báróval. A házasságkötésre 1914 januárjában már a kelet-afrikai brit protektorátus kikötővárosában, Mombaszában került sor. Az egyik tanú Vilmos svéd királyi herceg volt, aki memoárjában így emlékezik a menyasszonyra: "Karcsú, jó alakú, okos szemű, dús gesztenyebarna hajú, bájos és elegáns fiatal nő..." Ezt a vonzó ifjú hölgyet Karen Dinesennek hívták. Apai ágon ősnemes, anyai ágon gazdag nagypolgári famíliából származott; festőnek készült, s jobbára sikertelen írói próbálkozásokat is tudhatott maga mögött, amikor leendő férjével úgy döntött, hogy a későbbi Kenya gyarmaton kezdenek új életet. Édesanyja rokonsága, a vagyonos Westenholz család segítségével hatalmas birtokot vásároltak Nairobi közelében, "a Ngong-hegyek alatt", ahol kávétermesztéssel akartak foglalkozni. Rossz helyet választottak, a farm túlságosan magasan feküdt ehhez, ráadásul Blixen báró semmi hajlandóságot sem mutatott a gazdálkodásra: szívesebben futott a gyarmat szépasszonyai után, és tehetséges white hunternek, vagyis szafarivezetőnek bizonyult így ismerkedett meg a mi nagyszerű vadászírónkkal, Széchenyi Zsigmond gróffal és Hemingwayjel is. Karen Dinesen, illetve most már Karen Blixen viszont élete nagy és örök szerelmével ismerkedett eközben: Afrikával - az afrikai tájjal, az afrikai "bennszülöttekkel", a kelet-afrikai kikuju, szomáli, maszáj emberekkel és kultúrákkal. Afrikában, Afrika hatására lett belőle igazi és lenyűgözően egyedi karakterű író, a huszadik századi dán irodalom "nagyasszonya". Tizenhét évig élt a fekete kontinensen, nagyobbrészt férjétől külön-, majd elváltan, s meglehetősen viharos szerelmi viszonyban egy másik "természeti emberrel", a tragikus véget ért Denys Finch-Hattonnal. Örökölt dán birtokára, Rungstedlundbe visszatérve, 1937-ben előbb angolul, majd dánul megírta lírai memoárját-életrajzát, amelyet később romantikus- pszichológiai elbeszéléskötetek, regények követtek. Hosszú és súlyos betegségekkel terhes életének (1962-ben halt meg) főműve azonban kétségtelenül a Volt egy farmom Afrikában. Karen Dinesen, illetve Karen Blixen, leggyakoribb írói álnevén Isak Dinesen, olyan hódolattal és alázattal fordult Fekete-Afrika felé, olyan kivételes érzékenységgel figyelte és festette le tájait, lakóit, amilyenről azóta is alig tett tanúságot európai művész. S ami életrajzából és levelezéséből tudható: szenvedélyesen gyűlölte és megvetette a brit gyarmati közigazgatás korlátolt "felsőbbrendűségét" - Farah Adent, Kinan-dzsuit és a többieket tartva erkölcsileg előbbre valónak. Részint ennek az egyedülálló könyvnek az alapján készült Sydney Pollack hét Oscar-díjjal kitüntetett filmje, a főszerepekben a páratlan tehetségű Meryl Streeppel, valamint Robert Redforddal.

Toni Morrison - Beloved
In ​this Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of 1988, Toni Morrison frees herself from the bonds of traditional narrative and establishes an independent style, just as her characters have freed themselves from the horrors of slavery and escaped from Kentucky to Ohio. Revealing the story of Sethe and her family as they survive the brutality of the farm, only to encounter torments even more punishing than whippings after they escape, Morrison presents scenes in a seemingly random order, each scene revealing some aspect of life for Sethe, her boys, her dead baby Beloved, and the new baby Denver, both in the past and in the present. Moving back and forth, around, and inside out through Sethe's recollections, she gradually reveals Sethe's story to the reader, its horror increasing as the reader makes the connections which turn disconnected scenes into a powerful and harrowing chronology.
