After the dramatic events of the last volume, Rick Grimes, Glenn and Michonne leave the prison after attempting to rescue the occupants of a helicopter that had passed over the prison earlier. Their search brings them to a nearby town called Woodbury where a large, well-armed and well-organized group of survivors have taken refuge, led by a man called The Governor. After escaping the prison and the destroyed Woodbury army, Rick and Carl attempt to find shelter in a nearby town and reunite with the others in their group who survived. While holed up in a nearby town, Rick's sanity begins to unravel with guilt over Lori and Judith's deaths, while Carl begins to grow more independent and apathetic. They eventually manage to reunite with Michonne and the other survivors at Hershel's Farm, where they decide to stay. However, before they can recover fully, three new survivors arrive and present an unbelievable opportunity for the group if they join them.

The Walkin Dead Volume 3: Safety Behind Bars includes issues 13-18. After being forced to leave Hershel's Farm, Rick's group stumble upon what seems to be a permanent sanctuary, an abandoned prison. Not long after, a grisly murder takes place, and the survivors learn for the first time that the greatest threat to survival in this new world is not the walking dead, but other people.

A Walking Dead (Élőhalottak) univerzumában nemigen akad sötétebb, vészjóslóbb alak a Kormányzónál, aki torz igazságérzete által vezérelve, despotaként uralja Woodbury falakkal körülkerített városát, a készleteikért habozás nélkül mészároltat le másokat, a foglyait arra kényszeríti, hogy zombikkal küzdjenek meg az arénában, és saját kezűleg csapja le az ellene szegülők végtagjait.

All of a sudden Dale is kidnapped in the night by a group of cannibalistic hunters who terrify the group into hiding in a small town. Rick, Abraham, Michonne, and Andrea set out to find this new threat and stop them, though they finally see their humanity torn to the last shreds with their actions to stay alive.

The Walking Dead Volume 10: What We Become, includes issues 55-60. This volume happens as the group makes it's way to Washington D.C. with a scientist who can apparently end the outbreak. Rick is immediately at odds with Abraham over their methods on how to lead. They eventually agree to work together after it is found out they are bonded by the loss and tremendous guilt over the deaths of their families. With Carl in tow, they travel to Rick's hometown for supplies at Rick's old police station and to find out if Morgan and his son are still there. Along the way, Rick finally sees just how far he is willing to go to protect the people he has left to protect.
Robert Kirkman - The Walking Dead 4. - The Heart's Desire
The Walking Dead Volume 4: The Heart's Desire includes issues 19-24. The group manages to quell Dexter's rebellion and begin to further secure The Prison. At the same time, a katana-wielding woman named Michonne arrives at the prison seeking refuge. Her arrival quickly causes discomfort among the survivors. Her attempt to start a relationship with Tyreese leads to the first major schism within the group, and Rick is sidelined as leader as the others start to fear for his sanity. The volume ends with one simple proclamation that will forever change the survivors thinking of their own humanity.

The Walking Dead Volume 2: Miles Behind Us is the second volume of The Walking Dead and contains issues 7-12. This volume picks up after the events of Volume 1: Days Gone Bye. After the death of Amy, Jim, and Shane, Rick Grimes and the rest of the survivors leave Atlanta and travel across many miles of hostile territory. The group picks up new members such as Tyreese, Chris, and Julie, and loses old ones as they attempt to survive the brutal winter. The group find shelter at Hershel's Farm, though events quickly take a turn for the worse after it is discovered that Hershel has been keeping the barn full of walkers in the hopes of someone finding a cure for the epidemic. An attempt to open the barn results in the walkers breaking loose...
