Arthur ​Conan Doyle hősét sem a krimikedvelőknek, sem az igényes lektűr rajongóinak nem kell bemutatni. S bár kiadónk a közelmúltban a szerző valamennyi Sherlock Holmes-történetét tartalmazó sorozat első kötetét jelentette meg, úgy véltük, hogy az írások hangulatát, a zseniális nyomozó gondolatmenetét leghívebben az eredeti szöveg adhatja vissza. A ​kötet a krimi klasszikusának tizenkét novelláját tartalmazza. A címadó történetben az elszegényedett nemesi család kedvező bérleti feltételekkel birtokba vesz egy hatalmas házat. A beköltözés után a fülükbe jut, hogy az előző tulajdonos talán a ház téglái közé van befalazva, mert komornyikja, Quentin eltette láb alól.
