“Do you speak English? A princessz ijedten felelt tökéletes angolsággal, de hirtelen abbahagyta. Hiszen angolul magyarázta el, hogy mért nem tud angolul!”
L. G. Alexander - New Concept English - First Things First (Students' Book)
This important new course leads the adult and secondary school student who is an absolute beginner to fluent English through four integrated books. Each of the four books can, however, be used independently of the others and can indeed be entered at any point. The course will be found particularly suitable for adult students in need of remedial work; schools and language institutes where wastage caused by irregular attendance is a problem; and students who wish to study on their own. The basic aims of the course are: to train the student in the four skills of understanding, speaking, reading and writing,•to provide the student with a course that will enable him to use the language; and to enable the student to work entirely from a single volume without the need for additional practice books. The new concept introduced by the author to achieve these aims is particularly that of the multi-purpose text which is used as a basis for aural comprehension, oral praetice, reading, oral composition, dictation, controlled comprehension, précis and composition practice, and written grammar exercises in recall.
John Grisham - The Last Juror
In 1970, one of Mississippi's more colourful weekly newspapers, The Ford County Times, went bankrupt. To the surprise and dismay of many, ownership was assumed by a 23 year-old college drop-out, named Willie Traynor. The future of the paper looked grim until a young mother was brutally raped and murdered by a member of the notorious Padgitt family. Willie Traynor reported all the gruesome details, and his newspaper began to prosper. The murderer, Danny Padgitt, was tried before a packed courtroom in Clanton, Mississippi. The trial came to a startling and dramatic end when the defendant threatened revenge against the jurors if they convicted him. Nevertheless, they found him guilty, and he was sentenced to life in prison. But in Mississippi in 1970, 'life' didn't necessarily mean 'life', and nine years later Danny Padgitt managed to get himself paroled. He returned to Ford County, and the retribution began.

Joseph Heller - Good as Gold
Bruce Gold, a Jewish, middle-aged university English professor and author of many unread, seminal articles in small journals, residing in Manhattan, is offered the chance for success, fame and fortune in Washington D.C. as the country's first ever Jewish Secretary of State. But, he must face the consequences of this, such as divorcing his wife and alienating his family, the thought of which energizes him and makes him cringe at the same time. Furthermore, he's faced with the task of writing about the Jewish experience in America, but isn't sure he's lived it and thus has to figure out what it is, not knowing that he was invariably going to describe his own life.
Michael Crichton - The Andromeda Strain
The United States government is given a warning by the pre-eminent biophysicists in the country: current sterilization procedures applied to returning space probes may be inadequate to guarantee uncontaminated re-entry to the atmosphere. Two years later, seventeen satellites are sent into the outer fringes of space to "collect organisms and dust for study." One of them falls to earth, landing in a desolate area of Arizona. Twelve miles from the landing site, in the town of Piedmont, a shocking discovery is made: the streets are littered with the dead bodies of the town's inhabitants, as if they dropped dead in their tracks. The terror has begun . . .

A mai olvasó nyilván csodálkozva hall e rég elvonult viharokról. Ma főként azokra a kiváló fordításokra figyel, amelyek aligha jöttek volna létre a kötet kínálta alkalom nélkül.
Anne Rice - The Mummy
With this kick-off to a new series, Vampire Chronicler Rice abandons her troupe of nocturnals for the living dead of another kind. In a tale that's part horror and part romance, Egyptian King Ramses, made immortal in his youth, is awakened from self-imposed dormancy and deposited in 1914 London. Ramses's introduction to modern times is charming but slow. The plot, however, revs up a bit when he returns to Cairo and runs into an old girlfriend. Much in this book will be familiar to Rice's fans, except in this case it doesn't work. The characters are mostly boring and the conflict is flimsy. You know nothing bad is going to happen to anybody--and nothing does. You're also cheated out of a genuine conclusion, which is both dissatisfying and unfair. Stick to those blood drinkers, Anne, and let the sleeping mummies lie. - Michael Rogers, "Library Journal"
Charles Dickens - Our Mutual Friend
Paul Scofield, one of Britain's most distinguished actors, reads Our Mutual Friend, Dickens' mysterious murder story. Scofield won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Sir Thomas More in A Man For All Seasons, a role he created on the stage. In the last of Dickens' completed novels, a bitter love triangle, a mysterious inheritance, and power of money motivates, frustrates and activates the characters to a bitter end. Our Mutual Friend is a witty indictment of a society fallen prey to the dawning age of commercialism.
John Grisham - The Associate
If you thought Mitch McDeere was in trouble in The Firm, wait until you meet Kyle McAvoy, THE ASSOCIATE Kyle McAvoy grew up in his father’s small-town law office in York, Pennsylvania. He excelled in college, was elected editor-in-chief of The Yale Law Journal, and his future has limitless potential. But Kyle has a secret, a dark one, an episode from college that he has tried to forget. The secret, though, falls into the hands of the wrong people, and Kyle is forced to take a job he doesn’t want—even though it’s a job most law students can only dream about. Three months after leaving Yale, Kyle becomes an associate at the largest law firm in the world, where, in addition to practicing law, he is expected to lie, steal, and take part in a scheme that could send him to prison, if not get him killed. With an unforgettable cast of characters and villains—from Baxter Tate, a drug-addled trust fund kid and possible rapist, to Dale, a pretty but seemingly quiet former math teacher who shares Kyle’s “cubicle” at the law firm, to two of the most powerful and fiercely competitive defense contractors in the country—and featuring all the twists and turns that have made John Grisham the most popular storyteller in the world, THE ASSOCIATE is vintage Grisham.
Irving Stone - The Agony and the Ecstasy
Irving Stone's powerful and passionate biographical novel of Michelangelo. His time: the turbulent Renaissance, the years of poisoning princes, warring popes, the all-powerful Medici family, the fanatic monk Savonarola. His loves: the frail and lovely daughter of Lorenzo de Medici; the ardent mistress of Marco Aldovrandi; and his last love - his greatest love - the beautiful, unhappy Vittoria Colonna. His genius: a God-driven fury from which he wrested the greatest art the world has ever known. Michelangelo Buonarotti, creator of David, painter of the Sistine ceiling, architect of the dome of St Peter's, lives once more in the tempestuous, powerful pages of Irving Stone's marvellous book.
Robert Burns - Selected Poems
The myth that has grown up around Robert Burns, Scotland's greatest popular poet, has sometimes obscured his original poetic gifts. The educated son of a poor cotter, Burns became known for his rustic background, his fraternity with the working man, his Jacobite loyalty and his amorous entanglements. Yet his contribution to literature is immense. His use of dialogue and colloquial speech is comparable to that of Chaucer and Byron, but is also uniquely his own. He liberated language, allowing freedom to the Romantic movement, and his use of old folk tunes enormously enhanced the Scottish musical tradition. With imaginative zest he satirized the Scottish community and offered shrewd insight into human nature. Although he was supremely aware of local concerns - religion and politics in particular - his work transcends the parochial and is now admired internationally for its depth of vision.

Jávorszky Béla Szilárd - Sziget 20 (angol)
"In 2012 the Sziget festival will be organized for the twentieth time. We can proudly say that the event voted as the Best European Major Festival may be the greatest success of Hungary since the political shift of 1989. From the standpoints of both variety and openness, the Sziget is a one of a kind event, not only in Hungary but in Europe as well. There is no other festival on the old continent whose growth has been this fast. With its programs and cultural colorfulness, its price to worth ratio, its standard of services and the many causes it fought for, it cannot be compared to anything else. You can be an anarchist punk from the Netherlands, a French philosopher, or a German bank leader, you will find the means to satisfy your needs. It's a place where the music of the world, the Gypsies, the African culture, the LGBT community, Jewish culture, the environmentalist and civil movements all have a designated space. Every year it gives you everything music has to offer, from mainstream pop to the underground, from teenage punk to modern opera, from an African village to the street theatre, from disco to literary events. It's also a place where the visitors can choose from a wide selection of high-quality gastronomic possibilities. Not only from traditional Hungarian dishes, but Arab, Greek, Chinese, Thai, Jewish, Italian, French, Balkan, or Indian, wines, beers, spirits and cocktails, everything. Not speaking of the backstage where the biggest artists can try the fantasies of a Michelin-starred chef. Without exaggeration the Sziget is one of the biggest, most open and democratic megaparties, attracting the young and not so young to the river-caressed green heart of Budapest, across a bridge, on an island where a new world awaits them."
Sharon Delano - Annie Leibovitz at Work
The celebrated photographer Annie Leibovitz, author of the New York Times bestselling book A Photographer's Life, provides the stories, and technical description, of how some of her most famous images came to be. Starting in 1974, with her coverage of Nixon's resignation, and culminating with her controversial portraits of Queen Elizabeth II early in 2007, Leibovitz explains what professional photographers do and how they do it. The photographer in this instance is the most highly paid and prolific person in the business. Approximately 90 images are discussed in detail -- the circumstances under which they were taken, with specific technical information (what camera, what settings, what lighting, where the images appeared). The Rolling Stones' tour in 1975, the famous nude session with John Lennon and Yoko Ono hours before Lennon was killed, the American Express and Gap campaigns, Whoopi Goldberg in a bathtub of milk, Demi Moore pregnant and naked on the cover of Vanity Fair, and coverage of the couture collections in Paris with Puff Daddy and Kate Moss are among the subjects of this original and informative work. The photos and stories are arranged chronologically, moving from film to digital. Leibovitz's fans and lovers of great photography will find her stories of how one learns to see -- and then how to photograph -- inspiring.
Michael Crichton - Congo
Deep in the African rain forest, near the legendary ruins of the Lost City of Zinj, an expedition of eight American geologists is mysteriously and brutally killed in a matter of minutes. Ten thousand miles away, Karen Ross, the Congo Project Supervisor, watches a gruesome video transmission of the aftermath: a camp destroyed, tents crushed and torn, equipment scattered in the mud alongside dead bodies -- all motionless except for one moving image -- a grainy, dark, man-shaped blur. In San Francisco, primatologist Peter Elliot works with Amy, a gorilla with an extraordinary vocabulary of 620 "signs," the most ever learned by a primate, and she likes to fingerpaint. But recently, her behavior has been erratic and her drawings match, with stunning accuracy, the brittle pages of a Portuguese print dating back to 1642 . . . a drawing of an ancient lost city. A new expedition -- along with Amy -- is sent into the Congo where they enter a secret world, and the only way out may be through a horrifying death . . .
J. M. Barrie - Echoes of the War
Three nice old ladies and a criminal, who is even nicer, are discussing the war over a cup of tea. The criminal, who is the hostess, calls it a dish of tea, which shows that she comes from Caledonia; but that is not her crime. They are all London charwomen, but three of them, including the hostess, are what are called professionally 'charwomen and' or simply 'ands.' An 'and' is also a caretaker when required; her name is entered as such in ink in a registry book, financial transactions take place across a counter between her and the registrar, and altogether she is of a very different social status from one who, like Mrs. Haggerty, is a charwoman but nothing else. Mrs. Haggerty, though present, is not at the party by invitation; having seen Mrs. Dowey buying the winkles, she followed her downstairs, so has shuffled into the play and sat down in it against our wish. We would remove her by force, or at least print her name in small letters, were it not that she takes offence very readily and says that nobody respects her. So, as you have slipped in, you sit there, Mrs. Haggerty; but keep quiet.

Who also happens to be alleged reincarnation of King Arhtur. Ellie couldn't be happier to have Will in her life, but she's also worried that his estrangement from his parents is tearing him apart. To make matters worse, Will's doubt that he really is King Aruthur could prevent the Merlin Prophecy—an age of enlightenment—from occurring. Can Ellie convince Will to believe in something that even she isn't sure about? And more importantly, can she get him to give his parents another chance? With all the mythology and mysticism of AVALON HIGH, Meg Cabot's very first manga is indeed a tale for the ages.
Brander Matthews - Poems of American Patriotism
Looked eastward from the farms, And twice each day the flowing sea Took Boston in its arms; The men of yore were stout and poor, And sailed for bread to every shore. And where they went on trade intent They did what freemen can, Their dauntless ways did all men praise, The merchant was a man. The world was made for honest trade,— To plant and eat be none afraid.
Brander Matthews - Vignettes of Manhattan / Outlines in Local Color
THE little church stands back from the street, with a scrap of lawn on either side of the path that winds from the iron gate to the church door. On this chill January morning the snow lay a foot deep on the grass-plots, with the water frozen out of it by the midnight wind. The small fountain on one side was sheathed with ice; and where its tiny spirtle fell a glittering stalagmite was rising rapidly, so the rotund sparrows had difficulty in getting at their usual drinking-trough. The sky was ashen, yet there was a hope that the sun might break out later in the morning. A sharp breeze blew down the street from the river, bearing with it, now and again, the tinkle of sleigh-bells from the Avenue, only fifty yards away. There was the customary crowd of curious idlers gathered about the gate as the hearse drew up before it. The pall-bearers alighted from the carriages which followed, and took up their positions on the sidewalk, while the undertaker's assistants were lifting out the coffin. Then the bareheaded and gray-haired rector came from out the church porch, and went down to the gate to meet the funeral procession. He held the prayer-book open in his hand, and when he came to the coffin he began to read the solemn words of the order for the burial of the dead:
