Máskülönben az alapul vett történet Hédervári feldolgozásában nem is annyira indonéz, mint inkább indiai: a két főhős, Aparadzsitá hercegnő és Rámakrishna mintha a klasszikus indiai irodalomból léptek volna elénk. Romantikus barátságuk története, amely sorsszerűen végződik ugyan tragikus epizóddal, de amely mégsem komor fatalizmust sugall, hanem mindvégig reményt áraszt, remek alkalmat ad az írónak egyrészt arra, hogy az indiai kultúra iránt érzett vonzódását alkotó módon "bizonyítsa", másrészt pedig arra, hogy az oly távolinak tetsző, hagyományosan csodás elemekkel át- meg átszőtt világnak racionális, modern - s minden közvetlen erőltetettség nélküli - természettudományos magyarázatát adja. E "magyarázat" azonban a művészi ábrázolás módszereivel történik, mindvégig lebilincselően, szórakoztatva.

De ​Max Havelaar is niet alleen de beste roman uit de Nederlandse literatuur; het is ook een roman die na meer dan een eeuw nog steeds actueel is. Inhoudelijk misschien niet eens zozeer: als 'de Javaan' nog steeds mishandeld wordt dan is het tenminste niet meer door ons, en ook niet met ons uitdrukkelijke goedvinden. Maar formeel, als een boek dat begint als een roman en eindigt als iets wat direct ingrijpt in de werkelijkheid, is de Max Havelaar zo modern als geen ander boek in onze letteren. En wie alleen naar het romangedeelte kijkt met zijn ingewikkelde structuur, die bij het lezen toch zo logisch en doorzichtig blijft - die kan zich haast niet voorstellen dat er in onze taal nog eens iets zal worden gepresteerd van die kracht.

Each ​bird family is introduced by a short general account and a key to the family. These keys are based on those of Delacour's Birds of Malaysia (1947) adapted for the avifauna of the Javan province and to emphasize field character rather than measurements in the hand. Species order and English names follow those used in Birds of South East Asia by King et. al. (1975 For birds not listed in King's book I have given the most commonly used English names. Unconfirmed new additions to the Javan list are inserted after their nearest relative with the number affixed with the letter a. Each species has also been given an Indonesian name, whenever possible that most commonly used throughout Indonesia. Where no general Indonesian name exists I have taken I have taken the most widely used Javanese or Sudanese name. Species entries follow a standard format with a full description for each species, emphasizing key diagnostic characters.

In this book about Java written in 1912, Scidmore, who clearly loved the subject is very enthusiastic about the country and the traditions that have made Java such a unique place. It still remains a little known country nowadays but by reading Eliza Scidmore, we are transported to the beauty of the tropical gardens, the volcanoes, the magnificent buddhist temple of Borobudur, the impact of the conquest by Islam, its unique culture and so many places that I bet you did not even know they existed.

Raden Adjeng Kartini - Letters ​of a Javanese Princess
Translated ​from the original Dutch by Agnes Louise Symmers and originally published by Alfred A. Knopf, this collection of letters was written by the daughter of a Javanese civil servant in the Dutch colonial government. She had been permitted the unusual privilege of attending a Dutch elementary school, but then returned home to seclusion during her adolescence, as was the Indonesian custom for women. The letters provide a fascinating picture of the life and spirit of the time during the period when Java was undergoing intimate contact with Western civilization. Through her writings she became a spokesman for the liberation and education of women, as well as an advocate for Indonesian nationalist aspirations. Co-published with the Asia Society.
