Walt Whitman - Song of Myself And Other Poems
"Song of Myself," the premier poem in Leaves of Grass, is widely believed to be one of the most important poems in American literature. A large part of the brilliance of "Song of Myself" is the raffish playfulness of its diction--the poem belongs to the mid-nineteenth century's love of wordplay that also characterizes the work of Dickens and Twain. Walt Whitman was deeply interested in the American language as it was emerging in his time. He wrote about American dictionaries and was fascinated by the vocabularies of the sciences and the streets. There is a story that Walt Whitman was a regular visitor to the New York Public Library, where he loved to peer into the provenience of the words he overheard and read. Robert Hass and Paul Ebenkamp's lexicon walks us through his greatest poem and, in their footsteps, much is revealed about the words Whitman chose in 1855--their inflections, meanings, and native usages we wouldn't otherwise know. We are made to understand, perhaps truly for the first time, Whitman's query in "Song of Myself": "Have you felt so proud to get at the meaning of poems?" In the first part of the collection, Hass offers an introduction to the poem and then, with Ebenkamp, a rich annotation of "Song of Myself." The second part of this book includes poems from across the span of Whitman's career, selected by Hass, that give us a fresh look at the beauty, authority, and sweep of Whitman's work.

When Walt Whitman self-published his Leaves of Grass in July 1855, he altered the course of literary history. One of the greatest masterpieces of American literature, it redefined the rules of poetry while describing the soul of the American character. Throughout his life, Whitman continuously revised, expanded, and republished Leaves of Grass, but the 1855 original marked Whitman’s fresh and bold arrival, greeted by Ralph Waldo Emerson as “the beginning of a great career.” This volume specially compiled for Penguin Drop Caps will also include a range of additional popular poems including selections from "Calamus," "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry," and "Drum-Taps," as well as Whitman’s 1855, 1856 and 1976 prefaces and “Democratic Vistas.”

Walt Whitman - Selected Poems
Called by literary critic Mark van Doren "the most original and passionate American poet", Walt Whitman (1819-1892) created a body of verse uniquely his own - unconventional, lacking rhyme or meter, employing chanted lists of names and objects - but also powerful, sensual, oratorical and inspiring. His most famous work - Leaves of Grass - was a lifelong project Whitman compared to the building of a cathedral or the slow cumulative growth of a tree. During his lifetime the book (actually a series of books) went through nine editions, between 1855 and 1892. Today, it is considered a landmark of American literature. This volume contains 24 poems from Leaves of Grass, offering readers a generous sampling of Whitman's best and most representative poems.
Walt Whitman - Fűszálak
Whitman költészete forradalmat jelent a XIX. század amerikai irodalmában.
